Autumn 2020 Newsletter (Notice of AGM)
/We hope you are all well, and able to enjoy some lovely Autumn weather, enabling us to get out in our gardens for a bit longer yet!
It has been a strange year, and looks set to continue that way for some time. Many of us have been forced to try new ways of doing things, not least when we decided to try to have a virtual show. This worked extremely well, as you will see from the following:
Show Secretary’s Report
Well we have had a great response to our Virtual Show with 135 entries from 40 competitors. Thank you to all who entered and I hope it gave you all a chance to show your skills be it growing flowers, fruit and vegetables or your creative skills with cookery, craft and floral art.
The variety of fruit and veg was in abundance this year with a lot of people growing some for the first time. The craft section was bulging with projects completed during lockdown with a lot of new skills acquired over the last few months, and also having time to pick up long-forgotten ones.
It has been a difficult few months for all and I hope this Virtual Show gave you all another focus for these challenging times. A big thank you to Dave Hughes who has co-ordinated all your entries and don’t they all look brilliant on the BRHS web-page: www.brhs.org.uk/virtual-show
The list of winners is below and you will see some familiar names, but also some new ones. We hope we have inspired some new entrants to continue to compete next year in our Shows. Fingers crossed for 2021.

AGM Arrangements
Having advised you only last week that we were hopeful of being able to get into St Peter’s School for our AGM, and thereafter resume our programme of talks, these hopes have been dashed by the latest Covid-related restrictions and ban on more than 6 people meeting.
We are however obliged to have an AGM, so this is an official notification to members that it will take place at 7.30 on Wednesday 21st October. It will however take place on Zoom! Another new venture into modern technology for BRHS!
Instructions for taking part follow:
If you already use Zoom, you will just need to join the meeting at the time of the meeting.
If you do not currently use Zoom, you will need to create a free account by going to zoom.us, and clicking on “Sign up, it’s free”
Follow instructions to sign up for a free account. You do not need to pay for a subscription to join the meeting. We recommend doing this in advance, as it can take a few minutes to complete the process.
Members will receive the Meeting ID and Password via email. If you are not currently a Member, but would like to attend the AGM, please email Dave Hughes on web@brhs.org.uk for details.
If you have anything you would like to bring up in ‘Any other business’, could you please advise us in writing no less than 5 days before the AGM.
Programme of talks and trips for 2021/22
Ever optimistic, as gardeners are, we have organised a very good programme for next year, including two trips, in the hope everything will have returned to normal by then (I know!!).
Our celebrity speaker in February will be Pippa Greenwood. We will not however be issuing tickets yet for this event, as the situation on social distancing is so fluid we cannot be sure that it will be possible to hold it.
We will let you know as soon as possible.
