BRHS Annual Show 2024

On Saturday 24th August 2024, Burton & Rossett Horticultural Society held our 74th Annual Show at Darland High School in Rossett, including Rossett Dog Show. We were lucky with the weather the sun broke through and we had a wonderful and busy afternoon. Thank you to Jayde Davey for running her Dog Show again, and also to Andrea and Andrew from Gresford Library for their second hand book stall.

We had a total of 414 exhibits from 63 exhibitors which the Show Secretary was extremely pleased about, and what a wonderful variety of homegrown produce and homemade articles on display. What a talented group of people you are.

Thank you to Wrexham Mayor Cllr Beryl Blackmore for presenting the trophies this year. Here are just some of the 24 trophy winners for 2024. The Shepherd Challenge Cup, the Shallcross Rose Bowl, the Nat Maurice-Jones Bowl and the RHS Banksian Medal were all won by Don Owens for his magnificent display of home grown vegetables of all shapes and varieties. He won the Nat Maurice-Jones Bowl for his large onions – the most meritorious exhibit in flowers and vegetable sections. The Cam-yr-Alyn Bowl and the the E.C. Bellis Challenge Cup for highest points in the flower section, were both won by John Edwards.

The President’s Shield was won by Val Overson for best exhibit grown from a plant supplied by the society.

Caron Thomas won the Reddrop Challenge Cup for the heaviest marrow, whilst Claire Shepherd won both the Geoff Butler Memorial Trophy and the G Maitland Phillips Challenge Cup in the Novice sections. Well done Claire!

In the cookery section Sian Walton was awarded the Society Challenge Cup for highest points, then also being the first recipient of our new Hilda Walton Memorial Trophy for best exhibit in classes J1-J5. This trophy was presented by Hilda’s daughter Anne.

The most meritorious exhibit the 50th Anniversary Challenge Cup was won by Pat Weir for her 2 cheese and onion pasties.

In Floral Art Sian Walton and Kayleigh McManus jointly won the Bernard Walsh Cup for most points, and the Shordley Challenge Cup for the most meritorious exhibit was won by Sian Walton for her ‘Afternoon Tea’ exhibit which defied gravity; a sight to behold. Well done.

In the Junior Section Emily McManus won the Llyntro Trophy (aged 7 and under) for highest points, whilst William O’Grady won the Investiture Challenge Cup (aged 8 to 11) for highest points. The Eric Randles Memorial Cup for best exhibit in Junior section was won by Kyle Nuthall for his 3 decorated cup-cakes.

The Junior Section was sponsored by the Balfour Trust for Rossett and each exhibitor took home a mug and a sempervivum plant which were gratefully received.

Our wonderful BRHS committee, Judges, Stewards and volunteers for all their help over the last few months and on Show Day, without their help we would not be able to put on our Annual Show.

I think the quality is getting better each year, so roll on to our 75th Annual Show on Saturday August 23rd 2025.
